That, in short, is the delicious dynamic at the heart of “The Dunderheads,” Newbery Medal-­winner Paul Fleischman’s quirky illustrated caper for readers ages 8 to 12. In the story, we meet a class of oddball children over which looms the terrifying figure of Miss Breakbone, a ferocious, barrel-bosomed teacher who detests her pupils and relishes confiscating their ­belongings. “Every time she made a student cry, she gave herself a gold star,” explains the ­narrator, a boy nicknamed Einstein. His classmates call him that because he’s a “whiz at solving problems,” though of course Miss Breakbone wouldn’t know it. ­Einstein, it turns out, is not the only talented kid in the room. Each child has a moniker that evokes his or her particular genius: Google-Eyes can hypnotize animals (and her little brother); Pencil can draw anything from memory; Spitball can shoot a wad of paper amazing distances; and Hollywood has seen every movie ever made—11 times. So when, one day, Miss Breakbone insults the class by calling them “fiddling, twiddling, time-squandering, mind-wandering, doodling, dozing, don’t-knowing dunderheads” and then has the temerity to impound the green-eyed ceramic cat that a boy named Junkyard found in a trashcan and planned to give to his mom—well! The class decides to get even. Using their ­idiosyncratic skills, the children infiltrate Miss Breakbone’s gargoyle-bedecked mansion while she is having a party—David Roberts gleefully depicts her in a ghastly pink frock—and stealthily retrieve the cat. In its place, the triumphant children leave a note: “The Dunderheads were here!”
